Ostomy Care

Ostomy care delves into the management and treatment of clients with an Ostomy. In this course, students are taught the different types of stomas, how they form, as well as, the aids and appliances used to care for them. Students also explore peristomal skin, nutrition and hydration care.

    • Understanding the basic anatomy and physiology of the bladder, bowel, and skin 

    • Understanding medical conditions that lead to the formation of a stoma 

    • Understanding risks and complications associated with a stoma 

    • Having a practical knowledge of the different products used for each type of stoma 

    • Understanding the role of support workers in managing stoma care 

    • Applying and understanding the practical aspects of changing a stoma bag  

    • Applying the standard principles of infection prevention and control 

    • Understanding medication support for people with a stoma bag

    1. Removing a stoma bag

    2. Cleaning the skin

    3. Applying new products

    4. Applying a new bag  

    All practicals must be completed to pass course
