Assist with Medication
Assist with Medication allows students to learn the fundamentals of appropriately administering and monitoring client’s medication. This will include, medication anatomy, medication safety, delivery systems, medication storage and infection control. Students also learn how to importantly find accurate medication information, develop an understanding for over the counter and prescribed medication, as well as, recognise, report and take action to allergic or other medication reactions.

Understanding of South Australian medication regulations and the role of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)
Developing an understanding of medications, including, over the counter and prescribed preparations
Developing an understanding of how medications affect the body
Recognising, reporting and taking appropriate action to any adverse or allergic reactions
Having practical knowledge of the different formulations and routes
Having a basic knowledge of key medication effects and side-effects
Medication Authority
The role of consent in the administration of medication
The difference between self-administration, prompting and administration of medication, based on legislation and organisational policy
Developing an understanding of the risks and responsibilities relating to medication administration
Expiry dates and the disposal
Knowing how to use the Rights of Medication to diminish risk and maintain the principles of medication safety
Understanding the role and importance of documentation and record-keeping including incident observation and reporting

Checking medication from the Dose Administration Aid against the Medication Authority using three checks
Pouring liquid to 10mls
Students must complete all practicals to pass the course
