About Course

This course discusses the learning of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. Delving into the importance of client maintenance, such as, healthy eating, insulin management, taking blood glucose levels, hypo/hyperglycaemia events and sick day management, students graduate with a comprehensive ability to care for those with diabetes.

Diabetes Support meets the NDIS Code of Conduct, Practice Standards and High Intensity Skill Descriptors. These can be found below in course outcomes.

    • NDIS Code of Conduct, Practice Standards and High Intensity Skill Descriptors

    • Understanding symptoms, causes and risks associated with diabetes

    • Understanding the different types of diabetes and who they affect

    • Developing a basic knowledge of diabetes medication

    • Having a basic knowledge of key medication effects and side-effects

    • Developing a basic knowledge of primary management care for people living with diabetes including hydration, nutrition, exercise and lifestyle options including the role of the Glycaemic Index

    • Developing knowledge in taking a Blood Glucose Level including Continuous Blood Glucose Monitoring and use of the Time in Range concept for determining long-term BGL’s

    • Understanding Hypo- and Hyperglycaemia, reducing risk of these events and management options for each event including sick day management 

    • Developing knowledge in the administration of Insulin via subcutaneous injections, the role and application of sliding scale insulin and how to apply this principle from the Medication Authority

    • The role of infection prevention and control including hand hygiene, the use of appropriate PPE and disposal of sharps waste

  • Dependant on a service providers scope of practice, this course may have one or two practicals.

    1. Taking a BGL

    2. Subcutaneous injection (optional as per organisational requirement and registration)

    Students must complete all practicals to pass the course.
