Indwelling Catheter Care

Indwelling Catheter Care considers the anatomy and physiology of the bladder, as well as, why catheters are used. In this course, students are shown the vital care of equipment instructions and how this translates to clients at home. Students also gain the ability to use essential equipment needed to perform and understand general wellbeing, including good bladder health and UTI’s. Registered nurses and support workers are strongly encouraged to undertake this course.

    • Basic knowledge of bladder anatomy and physiology, as it relates to an indwelling urinary catheter

    • Understanding the different types of catheters 

    • Nutrition and hydration needs as they support use of an indwelling urinary catheter 

    • Having a working knowledge about management of drainage devices

    • Developing an understanding of the risks associated

    • Recognising the relationship between bowel health and catheters 

    • Recognising the relationship between adequate hydration and catheters

    • Recognising Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI) and other complications 

    1. Connecting and disconnecting the leg bag  

    Students must complete all practicals to pass the course
